a big weekend for our athletes with the novice boxers and also the professionals having fights from Friday through untill sunday afternoon.

Heavyweight Professional boxing started the weekend off with Anthony “Chooky” Fowler boxing an experienced amateur and former Qld champion, Hasely Hepi at Southprot RSL.
Chook was winning the first 2 rounds clearly when a barrage of punches caught him in the 3rd round and the ref jumped in to stop the contest. Anthony wasnt hurt but the referee’s decision was made after Hepi threw several punches without return from our own big man.

On Saturday morning we weighed 3 amateur boxers in at the Qld novice championships,Lewis Glover,Raisa Lyons and Troy Ford .There happened to be no matches for Raisa and Troy but Lewis Glover won his way through to the final on Sunday in the 69kg B class division.
Lewis stuck to the game plan by having a tight defence and beautifull long straight scoring punches that frustrated his opponent throught the 3 round fight.During the second round Lewis was deducted 2 points for an apparent punch after the referee had called stop,a little hard to take as we all know that Lewis is a true gentleman of the sport who always fights within the rules, therefore the win was even more pleasing that he had to come from 2 points down.

Professional Boxers Liam ” The Offender” Hutchinson from Mt Gravatt and “Hurri” Kane Cassells from Mt Gravatt East boxed on saturday night at Fortitude Valley against tough experienced opponents.
Liam fought Rex Regalato who is known as a boxer who is as tough as nails. The fight was a big one for Liam as Rex is from the same gym where the night was held so the homeground advantage was definately not with us.As always though we had an army of supporters behind us and to hear them screaming for Liam was definately a big part in the vicory.Liam won a Majority decision over Regalato over 4 rounds and definately learned alot from this fight, which will help him on his journey to the top.Liam’s cousin is European Irish Champion Paul McCloskey so the blood lines are strong and we look to advance his career in Australia and Possibly in Ireland.

The Hurri Kane, fought straight after Liam in his 2nd professional fight against Aaron Davis from NSW and what a fight this one was!

Kane boxed nicely throughout the fight with long Jabs and long hooks that caught Davis on number of occasions. The Second round was a war with Kane standing toe to toe with Aaron and the boys exchanged Bombs which was great for the crowd but scary for me.In the third round,I asked Kane to go out and box his opponent with class and style and take the mindset of former champions and believs that he is suppierior. It worked and ane was definately all class and won a unanamous decision against a very good boxer.

This week Englands Champ,Don Broadhurst arrives at The Boxing shop with a plan in place to fight for the world title within 18 months

In a night of upsets at the Mansfield tavern in Brisbane,”Irish” Paddy Murphy was at his brilliant best with a dominant win over the highly regarded “Killer” Kurt Finlayson.
The win was unanamous with Paddy winning every round of the fight, even though the tough and rugged Finlayson definately came to fight ,letting big right hand bombs go all throughout the fight.
Murphy controlled the fight well by using his jab and his footwork to constantly pick off Finlayson and when the time came,Paddy took his attack to the body where he had some success.
Finlayson is a Muay Thai warrior who will win many boxing fights in the future but on this night came up against a slick boxer who has had more than 100 amateur fights and represented Ireland on Many occassions and this experience is the reason Paddy Murphy controlled the fight.
Next for Paddy is the Qld Title fight on November 26 at Fortitude Valley in Brisbane.

Friday 13th is unlucky for some but not for new professional Boxer “Irish” Paddy Murphy.
With a great preperation behind him including some awesome sparring sessions with James Giltrow,Todd Kidd and Jason Kanofski (thanks boys),Paddy was ready to rumble on the night.

Although a little nervous Paddy knew of the game plan and stuck to it perfectly “The plan was to stay calm and use the jab and just look for opportunities” said coach Gareth Wiliams.

The Night ended up being a short one for Paddy with a k.o in 1m 5 secs of the first round,”Even though Paddy scored an early stoppage, all the signs were there, and the final punch was very well executed” Williams said.

On the weekend we competed in the Qld novice championships with Stephen Atcheler (senior A class),Kalpo Esara Alo (senior C class) and Troy Ford (sub junior) all winning Gold medals, with Stephen winning 2 fights in 2 days and showing a great improvment in form since he started doing his roadwork every morning before work and following a strict eating plan.
